Graham's Match Reports
COUNTY CUP CHAMPIONSHIP UNDER
12'S RUGBY Newent reached the quarter-finals of the County Cup
with an unbeaten run over four matches. They didn't concede a single point. However when meeting the reigning champions,
St Marys, Newent went down to one score, despite producing a brave display in a punishing match. The boys should be proud of their lion-hearted performance. This is a team with several valuable new players
and will be an even greater force in the future. I have not mentioned
individuals in this report as this was an absolute team effort. Well done everyone and especially the coaching team who give
up their time so generously!!

UNDER 12'S RUGBY REPORT THORNBURY 0 NEWENT 28 A physical contest, played at a pulsating pace, saw Newent lower the colours of a formidable
Thornbury side. In the first half
Newent fought a tenacious battle to defend their line from wave after wave of attacks. As the half progressed however, props
MATT ANDERSON & KIERAN KNIGHT made their presence felt with several forays into Thornbury's territory. DARIO LANCIANO
was his usual dynamic force in the loose & JACK ALBERTS in the line-out made the most of some accurate throws by hooker
JAMES LOVERIDGE. Captain SEBB VENN & TOM WEBB were unflinching in contact and with astute kicks kept the opposition at
bay. In the second half Newent took
the game by the scruff of the neck. An inspired passage of play between forwards and backs culminated in a fine try for winger
JOSH LLEWELLYN. Newent cranked up the pressure still further with a surging run by DARIO LANCIANO who off-loaded for scrum-half
JAMES GOUGH to touch down. Newent were now in dominating
form with PIERCE BOWKETT scoring a great try following a smart piece of interplay. He added to his tally with a bullocking
run which burst through the heart of the Thornbury defence. Fly-half TOM WEBB converted all four tries. This result fires a warning to future opponents - Newent's small squad is a force
to be reckoned with
NEWENT 26 OLD PATS 14
A stunning
first half display by Newent rocked Old Pats to their very foundations. Right from the outset Newent swarmed all over the
Cheltenham side and a fantastic forward drive resulted in a great try for LIAM LUSTY. PIERCE BOWKETT converted. Almost immediately
JAMES LOVERIDGE muscled his way over the line only to be denied by the referee's interpretation.
The visitors tried to launch attacks
but were squeezed for space by the speed of the Newent cover. The home side turned the screw still further through scrum-half
JAMES GOUGH, who dashed over for an opportunist try, converted by PIERCE BOWKETT. Prop forward MATT ANDERSON increased
the lead following a typical bullocking run. The first half drew to a conclusion with the bustling fly-half, PIERCE BOWKETT,
touching down and converting his own score.
The second period told a different story with Old Pats launching a series of dangerous attacks
which resulted in two converted tries. Newent stuck to their task however and closed out the game as worthy winners.
The town side were without captain
SEBB VENN, TOM WEBB & SHANE BROWN, which makes this win even more commendable.
UNDER 12'S RUGBY
CHOSEN HILL 0 NEWENT 63 Newent produced a towering performance to topple a courageous
Chosen Hill. This resounding win was built upon clinical forward dominance and adventurous back play.
Newent opened the scoring through PIERCE BOWKETT following a smart piece of passing. A close range
effort from TOM GRIFFIN and a beautifully crafted try, finished by winger DAN GEORGE, dealt Chosen a hammer blow. Tenacious
tackling by TOM WEBB & SEB VENN snuffed out any hope of Chosen reducing the deficit.
The second period saw Newent cranking up the pressure with GEORGE HUMPHRIS a leading light. MATT ANDERSON increased
the lead following drives from JACK ALBERTS, LIAM LUSTY & JAMES LOVERIDGE. The versatile DARIO LANCIANO conjured up a
brilliant individual score from deep in his own half and centre SHANE BROWN added to the tally after bursting through the
Chosen defence. A magical try from TOM WEBB and a further one from prop MATT ANDERSON put Newent out of sight.
Captain SEB VENN, at full back, dealt confidently with any dangerous incursions and added to the mix
with impressive counter-attacks. The try count was concluded by industrious hooker JAMES LOVERIDGE, who crashed through
two tackles for a deserved score. All the tries were converted.
CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL NEWENT U'12'S PLAYED 5, WON 3, DREW 1, LOST 1
The courage and tenacity displayed by Newent in this tournament was unparalleled. In terrible weather conditions the best teams from across five counties
gathered to do battle and Newent can be proud of their performance.
The first match saw
Newent dominate Stourbridge with terrific forward play and all round tackling. This was rewarded with a memorable try from
RICHARD SAMUEL following a smart passage of play through the back line.
In the second
match Clifton presented formidable opposition but an opportunist try by MATT ANDERSON secured a great win.
It's unusual for Newent to meet a physically bigger side but Droitwich fitted the bill. However, total
commitment saw Newent come from behind to level through TOM WEBB. In the end it was heartbreak for Newent when Droitwich sneaked
a try with the last play of the game.
In a feisty contest with Old Patesisans, Newent toughed-out a deserved
draw. Against Longlevens a powerful drive
for the line by dangerous DAN GEORGE secured a thoroughly deserved win.

CINDERFORD 0 A great display of abrasive forward play, coupled with
superb incursions by the backs, gave Newent a comprehensive win over a hard working Cinderford side.
In the early stages, Cinderford's big pack matched the home side
in the set pieces but at the break downs Newent's more mobile forwards gained the ascendancy. Full-back SEB VENN
opened the scoring for Newent with a cleverly timed run to outwit the defence with pure pace. The ever reliable SHANE BROWN
converted the first of his five successful kicks during the match.
MATT ANDERSON is a prop in formidable form and he was on hand to extend the lead following a sweeping move
from the backs.
In the second half
Newent raised their game still further and a bullocking run from PIERCE BOWKETT supported by hooker JAMES LOVERIDGE &
scrum-half JAMES GOUGH, saw the centre dive over to score.
Newent's pack was running riot in the loose with stand out displays from GEORGE HUMPHRIS, LIAM LUSTY, JACK ALBERTS
and JOSH COLE. TOM WEBB at fly-half was marshalling his backs well with darting runs and off-loads, giving wingers DAN GEORGE
& RICHARD SAMUEL enough room to make their presence felt. Newent added two more tries through JAMES GOUGH & MATT ANDERSON
before the final whistle. Home coaches ROSS WEBB, LAURENCE VENN & WILL COLE were all delighted with this display and rightly
so!
BROMYARD 0 NEWENT 10 This was undoubtedly the best team performance seen from Newent this season. As usual, the forwards were uncompromising,
but to see the backs spinning the ball along the line was pure justification for the hard work of the coaches.
Bromyard
had a big set of forwards and in the early stages looked dangerous, but Newent's tackling met the challenge full
on. As the game progressed Newent's tenacity saw the Hereford
side defending desperately but intense pressure eventually saw scrum-half, James Gough, touch down from close range In the second half Newent's pack and backs pinned Bromyard in their own half but the home side held on
until another brilliant set-piece, saw James Gough slice through for his second try.
Newent should be proud to lower the colours of a formidable Bromyard side. Exceptional!
NEWENT 56 CHOSEN HILL 0 An outstanding display of forward power and forthright play by the backs, saw Newent
produce a memorable result. Newent's forwards took control from the outset with prop Matt
Anderson scoring a trademark try converted by Shane Brown. Inside centre Tom Webb also struck with a typical individually
crafted try which was immediately followed by George Humphris who touched down after a bullocking run. Shane Brown converted. George Humphris was causing havoc and added another score to the tally after a surging attack.
Further tries were scored by Seb Venn, Matt Anderson, Ben Stevens and Shane Brown. Chosen Hill were a plucky outfit but were stifled in attack by prodigious tackling from Seb Venn, who led by example,
Tom Webb, James Loveridge and James Gough. The raw strength of Dan George and Josh Cole coupled with the speed of Rich Samuel
added to the mix. Taffy Cole and Keenan Brown-Williams, playing a year up, plus Reece Brown-Williams all made worthwhile contributions.
Will Cole produced a master class in refereeing which had to be seen to be believed!
LYDNEY 7
NEWENT 61 A feast of tries for Newent over Lydney
provided the perfect start to the new season. The match was only minutes old when an astute throw to the lineout from James Loveridge was snapped up by Matt Anderson who dived over for the opening try.
A kick deep into
Newent's 22 was fielded by Rich Samuel who created a brilliant individual
try with a run the length of the pitch. This was followed by tries from James Gough(2), Matt Anderson, and Tom Griffin with Seb Venn's trusty boot converting, to give Newent a 40-0 half-time lead.
In the second half Lydney raised their game but two converted
tries by Seb Venn rocked them back on their heels. Lydney
showed spirit when they scored a try of their own through
Morgan Freeman, converted by Jake Nelmes. Newent however,
reasserted their dominance through Seb Venn who completed a hat-trick
of second half tries.

Newent 10 Hucclecote 5
Tenacious tackling, combined with flashes of individual brilliance,

to increase Newent's lead. Hucclecote reduced the deficit just before the final whistle.
Newent 10 Longlevens 5
Another outstanding team performance from Newent gave them a "tooth
& nail" victory over a powerful Longlevens outfit. A spirited drive from hooker James Loveridge was only halted just short
